How to Learn About Yourself

The first step to finding your dream job is to learn as much about yourself as possible. This means exploring your values, skills, interests, and personality. Whether you are seeking a job or internship, or considering graduate or professional school, knowing more about yourself will help you find the focus you need to be successful in reaching your goals.

To learn what's important to you, ask yourself these questions.

  • Personal Interests: What interests you? What do you like to do when you’re not in class? What issues are you passionate about?
  • Academic Interests: Which subjects do you enjoy most? What do you most want to learn? Would you like to research a particular topic in depth?
  • Career or Academic Goals: What do you see yourself doing after you finish your degree at Hopkins? Graduate school? Full-time work? A fellowship?
  • Work Values: What motivates you to do your best? What motivates you to take action? What makes you advocate a cause or point of view?
  • Skills and Characteristics: What are your strongest skills? Which skills would you like learn? Which ones do you want to enhance?

How the Career Center Can Help
These questions are not always easy to answer at first glance. Many students consult a career counselor at the Career Center when working through them. To set up an appointment to discuss your career goals, please contact us. In addition, the Career Center offers the following assessment tools that may help.

Strong Interest Inventory
A tool designed to assist you in clarifying your work related interests. This assessment requires interpretation by a Career Counselor. If you are interested in using the Strong, please call 410-516-8056 to make an appointment.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator
A tool designed to explore your personality preferences. Talking with a career counselor can help you apply your results to your career interests. If you are interested in taking the Myers-Briggs, please call 410-516-8056 to make an appointment.
