About Capoeira

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art, developed by slaves during the colonial period. The slaves needed a way to learn to defend themselves, but were not allowed to practice martial arts openly. The martial art aspect of Capoeira was disguised, so in addition to self-defense, it incorporates elements of dance and acrobatics.

Capoeira is practiced in the roda, a circle formed by other Capoeiristas contributing axe (energy) to the game by singing and clapping. The game is always played to music made by a group of instruments at the side of the roda. The beat is set by the berimbaus, traditional bow-shaped instruments. Also, most rodas include an atabaque, a large drum, to help keep the beat.

Capoeira Luanda was founded by Mestre Jelon , and our group in Baltimore is taught by Instructor Pescador.
