| I graduated from Ohio State University in June of 2006 (Go
Bucks!) with a BS in geology and am now a graduate student at Johns Hopkins. My current area of research interest is Antarctic volcanism; cinder cones spread throughout the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica provide an interesting opportunity to study geologically 'recent' (1-4 Ma) volcanism. Additionally, these cinder cones might be analogous to cinder cones found in the Southwest region of the US which are associated with Basin and Range extension, suggesting that the events that shaped Southwestern US are similar to the events that shaped the Dry Valleys. A detailed comparison of Antarctic cinder cones to Basin and Range cinder cones will allow for a broader understanding of the past and present tectonics in the Antarctic region. |
