Academic Background2003 M.Sc. University of Pune, India. Research InterestsI’m fascinated by fundamental magmatic processes that are behind the observed diversity of igneous rocks in the Earth’s crust. My current focus is a silicic-mafic magmatic association in the form of a layered gabbro-diorite sequence emplaced within granitic country rock at Isle au Haut, Maine. Individual contacts between these layers show clear evidence of interaction between the two magmas in highly molten states. I’m investigating the mechanism of this interaction, which evidently is the result of gravitational instability between the two magmas. Another critical aspect of this work involves developing a detailed thermal model for the cooling and solidification of this system and comparing it with results from Crystal Size Distribution (CSD) studies of these rocks. Similar silicic-mafic magmatic associations are relatively common in many granitoids along the Maine coast. These granitoids represent intrusive activity accompanying subduction and island arc volcanism during the Acadian Orogeny. I would like to explore the connection between the juxtapositioned mafic and silicic magmas, these granitoids, and the accompanying island arc, and examine fundamental implications this may have for many magmatic environments.
