about the program

The Ready Set Design! program provides introductory engineering experiences for middle school girls in the Baltimore area, through half-day weekend programs on the Johns Hopkins University campus. The program is organized by the Johns Hopkins student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Financial support for this program is provided by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association, and the National Science Foundation.

Our activities this year will introduce participating students to the field of engineering, and to the ways that engineers contribute to the quality and cleanup of the environment. The girls will first learn about the engineering design process and about the theme of the activities, which is the conversion of a former industrial area to a public park. Then, the students will split into groups to work on the group design projects. Each group will design a device to perform a specific task related to the construction of the park. Creativity is encouraged - every idea is worth exploring!

Girls will also have the opportunity to interact with Johns Hopkins engineering students, as well as to meet local women who have found success and fulfillment in exciting engineering careers. Additional information about the program, and a sign-up sheet, can be found here.

schedule of events

Our next sessions for Spring 2005 are scheduled for Saturday, April 23. The morning session runs from 9 am to 12:00 pm, and the afternoon session from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm.

Both of the April 23 sessions will be held in the Great Hall in Levering Hall on the Johns Hopkins campus. (Levering Hall is labeled as number 4 on the map.) Free parking is available in the visitor lot shown on the map near the South Gate, and adjacent to Garland Field. This lot is accessible from Wyman Park Drive. City buses that serve the campus include the #4 and #11 buses, which stop on Charles Street on the eastern border of campus, and the #22 bus, which stops on University Parkway on the northern border of campus. Students participating in the Ready Set Design! activities are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from campus.

Note: There is a JHU men's lacrosse game Saturday at 1 pm, so parking will likely be tight on and around campus for the afternoon session.
