Study Consulting (<< Back to Academic Assistance home)

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to have a study consultant?
Nothing but time and effort; this is a service the university offers to you free of charge.

How does study consulting work?
Consultant and student meet for one hour per week; the focus of the meeting is to help the student develop successful study strategies in the area(s) most needed.

Could a study consultant help me?
Yes! Cooperating with your consultant and trying new strategies, as well as better time management, will help you to be more successful at JHU.

When is the best time to enroll in the study consultant program?
Ideally, you should enter the program at the beginning of the semester; however, students are accepted into the program all semester.

How do I enroll?
See Ms. Angela Ruddle in the Office of Academic Advising, 330 Garland Hall, to apply. You can either call 410-516-5506 for an appointment or drop in to OAA, Garland Hall, 3rd floor.

What will be expected of me if I work with a study consultant?
You will be required to meet one hour per week with your study consultant. We expect you to participate by trying different strategies for a few weeks. If you find they are not for you, you are not required to use them, but we’d like you to be open to your consultant’s suggestions for improvement. Meeting consistently and promptly are also expectations.

Can my study consultant work with my instructor and TA?
Your Study Consultant will encourage you to meet with your instructors but will not intercede for you. Part of being a responsible college student is being proactive as well as interactive with your instructors.

What if I find that the program is not for me?
Hopefully that will not be the case, but if you decide you’d rather not participate, a letter or e-mail to the coordinator and your assigned consultant saying you are withdrawing from the program is required.

What other kinds of help are available?
The Office of Academic Advising offers individual tutoring, group tutoring, and drop-in tutoring. Drop-in tutoring schedules are available in our office. Additionally, many departments offer “Help Sessions” as well as TA drop-in hours. There are many types of academic assistance available, and it is generally the smart, ambitious students who take advantage of them.
