Student Employment Opportunities

The Office of Academic Advising often has student employment openings for tutors, study consultants, and note takers. Job listings are posted on the Student Employment Services webpage.

Tutors

Tutors are graduate or undergraduate students at JHU who work on course specific material with students currently enrolled in the class. Tutors work with each individual and/or each small group a maximum of 4 hours per week. They must be devoted to their assignment(s) throughout the semester including reading period.

Grad students are eligible to offer tutoring in courses from their graduate department and some related courses. Undergrads that have earned an “A” in a JHU course are eligible to tutor that course. Tutor and student(s) create their own schedules together. The pay rate is $10.00 per hour for individual assignments and $12.50 per hour for small group assignments. All tutors must attend a two hour orientation/training workshop before receiving tutoring assignments.

Study Consultants

Study consultants are either graduate students or seniors in good academic standing with good study skills, organizational skills and the desire to help other students. Consultants typically are matched with one to three students with whom they meet individually, one-on-one for one hour per week. Consultant and student determine when and where to meet on campus. The pay is $12.00 per hour, and there are paid training workshops held a few times during the semester; a fall workshop and luncheon is held in late August to prepare consultants to begin working as soon as classes begin. Note Takers

Note Takers are hired through the Office of Academic Advising to provide class notes to students with disabilities. In order to receive notes, a student must submit official documentation to Dr. Richard Sanders in Academic Advising, and he will refer you to the Student Academic Assistance Coordinator to receive a note taker.

To qualify to become a note taker, you must attend every class for which you are taking notes, have well-organized notes, neat and legible handwriting, and must copy them in the Office of Academic Advising after every class. Arrangements will be made through our office to give the notes to the student(s) receiving them. Note takers are paid $75.00 per course per semester.
