Foreign Language Placement

Arabic
Students interested in Arabic placement should contact Professor Tahrawi.

Chinese
At this time, students with native listening and speaking ability in Chinese who have not developed their reading and writing skills should enroll in an appropriate level of an accelerated Chinese course. Contact the Language Teaching Center at ltc@jhu.edu if you are uncertain about your proficiency level. The Chinese placement exam will be given on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 from 2 - 4 p.m in Krieger 205.

German
When completing your registration for courses in the summer, use the following guide to choose your course(s) in German.

  • One or two years of high school German: choose German Elements (210.161).
  • Three years of high school German (or one year in a German speaking country): choose Intermediate German (210.261).
  • Four or more years of high school German (or greater than 1 year in a German speaking country): choose Advanced German (210.361).

All students who have had previous German instruction MUST take the German placement exam. The German Placement Test is a computerized test and will be administered on the following days at the Language Lab in Krieger Hall 506:

Tuesday, September 2, 2008 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m
Wednesday, September 5, 2008 from
10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 –4 pm

Once you receive a score on the exam, you will consult with the Language Coordinators to review your enrollment choices. Your enrollment will be checked again by your instructor on the first day of class. Placement results may also be discussed at the German Open House on Sept. 5th.

If you have any questions regarding placement, or wish to schedule a placement test at an alternate time, please contact the German Language Coordinator, Deborah Mifflin. Visit the German department web site for up-to-date information about the program and courses.

Hebrew
If you have no previous work in Hebrew, take Elementary Modern Hebrew (130.450). If you have had previous work in modern Hebrew, consult Ms. Braun in Near Eastern Studies. If you had previous work in Biblical Hebrew, consult Dr. Ted Lewis or Dr. Kyle McCarter in Near Eastern Studies.

Italian
Guidelines for placements in Italian are as follows:

  • If you had one year of Italian in high school: register for Elementary Italian.
  • If you had two or more years of Italian in high school: contact Prof. Alessandro Zannirato (410)516-7230 in Romance Languages during Orientation to set up an appointment to take a placement exam.

Japanese
The Japanese Language Placement Exam will be given during the first class meeting.
Questions may be directed to Professor Makiko Nakao.

Korean

Kiswahili
For more information, please contact Professor Jane Kamau.

Latin
At this time, register for the course you think is most appropriate. Go to class on the first day for more placement information. You may contact Dr. Matthew Roller with questions.

Russian
If you have had previous work in Russian, register for the course you think most appropriate. Reassignment will be made, if necessary, on the first day of classes. If you completed more than two years of high school Russian, register for Intensive Intermediate Russian
(377.135).
