History
Major and Minor
History is a versatile, useful discipline that
provides a number of methodological tools applicable in all professional
endeavors. Historians constructively use knowledge of the past to understand
the present and construct the future. By rigorously studying documents,
oral traditions, and artifacts, historians establish the context of
events that provide patterns of meanings of significant contemporary
collective social relevance. The
craft of the historian connects thought, values, behavior, institutions
and culture while providing invaluable training in collecting, analyzing,
synthesizing and reporting on data.
Highlights of the Hopkins Program
The program in history at Johns Hopkins carefully directs students in
research methodologies while working intensively in the classroom with
individual faculty to discover the richness, challenges and stylistic
varieties of historical writings. Histories of Europe, the United States,
Latin America, Africa and China are offered along with a number of
cross-disciplinary programs such as Women’s Studies, Jewish Studies,
The Humanities Center, Africana Studies, Latin American Studies, Medieval
Studies, and Global Studies. Majors require research and writing.
