French and Spanish Placement

Welcome! Students who have taken French or Spanish before college and plan to continue at Hopkins must take the departmental placement exam, called Webcape, before registering. As it is offered year-round, please take it just before the semester you actually plan to study the language.

Note: Even students who have been awarded AP credit for French or Spanish must take the placement tests!

If you want to register for French or Spanish in the fall, take the departmental placement test online. This multiple-choice test is individualized (self-adjusting to the student’s level) and is not timed. It covers grammar, vocabulary and reading skills. After taking the exam, sign up for the appropriate course depending on your score.

YOU MAY TAKE THE TEST ON-LINE ONLY ONCE.

Please note:
1. No waiver will be allowed based on the online score, you must take the exam during Orientation to receive a waiver. The exams are offered at the Language Laboratory (Krieger 506) on a rolling basis (no need to make an appointment) on:

Tuesday, September 2, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Wednesday, September 3, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Try to avoid 12 - 1:30 due to an Open House)

2. Students who receive a score that places them in the higher level of French will be required to take a supplementary 30-minute test during Orientation. It is offered in Krieger 308 on:

Tuesday, September 2, 2008 at 4:00 p.m.
Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at 4:00 p.m.

Questions regarding the test or your score should be sent to Claude Guillemard, for French and Barry Weingarten, for Spanish.
