Frequently Asked Questions
QUESTION:
Do I still need to take the French or Spanish placement test if...
1....
I already have an AP score?
A.: YES! All students taking French or Spanish at Hopkins must
take the departmental placement test.
2.
... I only had very little of the language?
A.: YES!
3.
... Ive had some French or Spanish but I dont feel confident
and I want to take the Elements course?
A.: YES! No student with any French or Spanish will be allowed
to take Elements without the placement test. The placement test will help
us determine your level more objectively.
4.
...Ive had some French but I forgot every thing?
A.: YES! (see #3)
5.
... I never had the language before?
A.: NO. If youve had NO French or Spanish at all, you should
start with an Elements course. This is the ONLY case when you dont
need to take the test.
QUESTION:
I believe my score does not reflect my level. Can I...
1.
...take the test online again?
A.: NO. Register for the course the test placed you in, but you
may take the test again during Orientation and be able to discuss your
situation with an advisor.
2.
...register for a different course than indicated in the score interpretation?
A.: NO. Follow the instructions exactly but keep in mind that you
will have a chance to discuss your situation with a coordinator during
Orientation. Any necessary adjustment to a students placement will
be made promptly during the first few days of class.
3.
...talk to someone about it before I register in the summer?
A.: We cannot ensure ongoing advising during the summer. Follow
the placement instructions for now and all specific situations will be
discussed during Orientation. You may call the Office of Academic Advising
for some assistance.
QUESTION:
Im not sure when (or if) I will take French or Spanish during
my years at Hopkins. Should I take the online test now?
A.:
If you are not sure you will take a language in the fall of your freshman year, you
dont need to take the test now because you dont need to register
yet. You will still be able to take the placement exam during Orientation
if you decide to take a language in September. For later semesters, the
Webcape is available at the language lab year-round and online.
QUESTION:
I just want to waive my language requirement. Do I need to take
the Webcape during Orientation?
A.:
YES. The online test is only to help you get an idea of your level
for Hopkins, but you must take the exam in person at the language
laboratory if you want to receive a waiver.
