Sarah S.
Class of 2013

Read my blog: Long Story Short—Sarah S.

Hometown: Gwynedd Valley, PA

Majors: Molecular and Cellular Biology, Spanish

Current residence: Off-campus

Past residence: Charles Commons, AMR I—Check out my Cribs video

Campus involvement: Research at Carnegie Institution, Phi Mu Sorority, Adult Literacy Tutoring at Greater Homewood Community Corporation

Why I chose Johns Hopkins: Hopkins has a beautiful campus, amazing research opportunities, and has minimal course requirements. It's also nice being only two hours away from home.

Favorite professor: I've met a lot of great professors here but the one that comes to mind first is Professor Sieber. Back before taking his Don Quijote course last spring, I didn't think Spanish literature would interest me that much, but I ended up liking it so much that I decided to take Professor Sieber's Spanish Theater in the Golden Age course this fall. These classes really influenced my decision to study abroad in Spain last year.

Why I'm glad I chose Johns Hopkins: I would not be the same person if I went to any other school. I wouldn't have met the same great group of friends, I probably wouldn't have gotten the chance to work on my own research project in an embryology lab, and I doubt that I would have had this much of an interest in Spanish literature. All of these things are going to have a huge impact on my life throughout the next three years and probably even after college.

My favorite character from a movie/book/television series: Denny Crane from Boston Legal is probably my favorite. Alan Shore would be a close second.

Favorite place on the Homewood campus: Gilman Hall! This building houses several humanities departments, and it's newly renovated. The three-story glass atrium is so cool and is my new favorite place to study.

Favorite Johns Hopkins memory: During February of my freshman year, classes were cancelled for a whole week because of the massive snowstorm. I slept in pretty much every day, went sledding on the hill behind the Bloomberg Building, and got to know a lot of my new Phi Mu sisters.

Three unusual things about myself:

  1. During two summers in high school, I worked for a construction company and a soft pretzel factory.
  2. I really like to color. My roommate got me a coloring book and crayons for my birthday.
  3. I can't wink.
