Dear Graduate Student:

Welcome to Johns Hopkins and the Whiting School of Engineering. I want to let you to know how happy we are that you've chosen us, encourage you to make the most of your graduate education here, and tell you to please make an effort to get to know the faculty, staff, and administrators in your departments (and, of course, the Dean's office!).

You should be happy to know that you are in terrific company. This fall, 32% of graduate students are women and last year, the Whiting School awarded the third highest percentage of female doctorates among US News & World Report 's top 25 ranked graduate engineering schools in the nation.

The Whiting School is dedicated to helping you succeed as a woman in what has been traditionally a male-dominated field¡ªto the recruitment and retention of women engineering students and faculty and to ensuring that women are given the resources and support they need to pursue careers in engineering. We actively recruit the top women students and faculty in the nation and around the world and I am pleased to let you know that we are making terrific progress. Five new women faculty members will be joining the Whiting School over the next two years and Kate Stebe, a long-time faculty member, has just be appointed chair of our Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

This guide is designed to answers questions and resolve challenges that you may face at the Whiting School and to encourage you to take advantage of the many resources and the academic, social and cultural opportunities we have to offer. I particularly want to urge you to take part in the Women of Whiting (WoW), a graduate women's group open to all women graduate students here.

Another resource I would like to share with you is the Peer Advising Program, providing seasoned women graduate students who serve as informal advisors and resources for incoming graduate women. Peer Advisors are available in every department to offer support and assist you in the transition to your graduate program.

We welcome you to your new community of students, scholars, and researchers. Have a successful, productive year.

Sincerely,

Nick Jones
