No, you won’t see us
producing Romeo and Juliet,
but no where else in the world can you see aliens (in shiny blue
spandex) taking over the DMV and Charlie Brown in purgatory in the same
evening.
We produce student written plays that are comical, dramatic,
thought-provoking, and sometimes utterly ridiculous.
Never submitted a play before? Is it your dream to boss actors around?
Are you good at lying to your friends and family but have always wanted
to do it on stage? That’s what we’re here for.
Come to a Playwriting workshop, Submit, Audition.
How you can get involved:
Get on our mailing list! We send out email announcements for play
submissions, directing interests, audition times, and production team
openings. Read and reply or show up.
- For writers: Send us a play to witnesstheater@jhu.edu.
While we accept
submissions all year long, we produce one full-length in February and 3
showcases of 3-5 one-acts at different times in the year, so look out
for what we're looking for at that moment. More information available here.
- For directors: Originally all we need from you is an
email saying you
are interested in directing, and we will reply with the current play(s)
we plan to produce and a questionnaire about you and your vision for
the script(s). More information available here.
- For actors: Come and audition! No experience
necessary. We will have
something for you to read or do when you arrive. More information
available here.
- For Techies: Get in touch with our Tech director at blackbirdwords@gmail.com
for more information. We will also send emails
when positions need to be filled for the current show. More information
available here.
We have most recently produced 2 Fall one-act showcases,
an intersession full-length, 1 spring showcase, and a "24-Hour Theater
Experiment", in which the entire process is done within 24 Hours one
Friday-Saturday.
We also offer free weekly playwriting workshops, and Intersession-long
free Acting, Directing, and Playwriting workshops, taught by area
professionals. Don't miss out! And join our Facebook group!
