Witness is the only Hopkins student
theater groups to produce 100% student work. We at Witness want to make
sure everyone knows how to get playwriting help, how to submit, and how
it works.
Mitch Frank, our workshop coordinator, also holds (free) weekly
playwriting workshops throughout the semester. They are held every
Friday at 12:30 in Silk Road, but if this time doesn't work for you,
email mitch.frank@gmail.com
. Depending on the week, this may be
one-on-one, or may be a group discussion. If you can't make it to a
workshop, you could also just email him your play, or work-in-progress,
for comments.
We are looking for both full-length shows and one acts, so feel free to
submit either. Our showcases are usually one acts, while our intersession
show is typically a full-length.
Submitting is as easy as emailing an attachment of your play to
witnesstheater@jhu.edu
before the deadline. If for some reason you do
want to submit but do not have the absolute finished product at the
deadline, send an email here stating that, and we may decide to give
you a bit of an extension. (It helps if you send your incomplete play,
and where you plan to go with the end, and how long you expect to take
to finish it.)
One submitted, the Witness President will be the only one to see your
name connected to the work before it is chosen to be produced. She will
remove your name from the script and forward it to the rest of the
Witness board (of 6 other students) to discuss the possibility of
producing the work, without a name attached. You will know within a
week or less if your play(s) were chosen. This "blind" selection
ensures that we are choosing the best plays, and are not biased by the
author's past work, or lack thereof.
If your play is chosen, you will have a chance to meet with the
director before auditions and discuss any considerations must be taken.
(For example, "I don't want any of my characters played by actors of
the opposite gender in drag.") You may also choose to be present at the
first read-through of the play with actors, and may change a line or
add a scene if it seems to come off differently than on paper.
One other opportunity to write plays for Witness is the 24 Hour
Experiment, which we will do in March. In past productions (not
affiliated with Witness), 3 writers, 3 directors, and approximately 12
actors gathered on Friday night, brainstormed on an original plot
(based off of or around 2 randomly selected props), then left the
writers to chug out a 15-30 minute play overnight. Actors audition in
the morning, rehearse all day, then present the play in front of an
audience Saturday night, finishing within 24 hours. If this sounds
interesting email us and we'll give you more details when we have them.
Witness Theater only accepts submissions written by Johns Hopkins University students and alumni.
