Charge to the

University Committee on the Status of Women

from Provost Steven Knapp

September 2002

This committee will develop formal analysis and strategy for the University and its leaders about: the nature and seriousness of the obstacles to gender equity for women faculty, students and staff; the dimensions that need to be addressed to correct these obstacles; and the strategic approaches to be taken at the level of the University and the individual Divisions to accomplish necessary organizational change.  Assessment of progress from ongoing interventions will be conducted, and interventions needed will be recommended.  One aspect of the analysis to be undertaken will focus on defining, in conjunction with the Diversity Leadership Council, the areas of concern that similarly affect women and underrepresented minorities and differentiate these from the areas of concern that are specific to gender or minority status, and the interventions appropriate to each of these.  The information basic to educating the University community and its leaders about all of these issues will be defined and approaches for such education recommended.
