Maryland Hall

Construction was begun on Maryland Hall in 1913, soon after Gilman Hall. Although the building was occupied in the fall of 1914, it was dedicated at the same ceremony as Gilman in 1915.

It was first called the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering building but in 1931 was renamed to recognize the critical role the Maryland General Assembly played in establishing the School of Engineering in 1912. The one-story structure attached to the rear of the building was used for experiments with heavy machinery and was known as Machinery Hall through the 1950s. Presently, Maryland Hall is home to the departments of Materials Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering, as well as the Center for Non-Destructive Evaulation and Applied Technology and the University's Instructional and Technology Facilities.
