DISCOVER HOPKINS POLITICS: International Conflict Resolution

Description:War and peace, and the factors that influence both, comprise the core of international relations. This class is an introduction to the theory and practice of international conflict resolution; students will gain a basic understanding of the causes and solutions to conflict from the perspective of state and non-state actors. In particular, the course will examine issues of ethnic and environmental conflict, diplomacy, humanitarian intervention, and how multiple sources of power affect conflict and peacemaking. It will also
explore the ethics of military intervention in interstate and internal conflict. Field trips to the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Institute for Peace, as well as to nonprofit peacebuilding organizations, will expose students to real-world applications of international conflict resolution. Students will participate in simulated peace talks, negotiating a resolution to a realistic international conflict.

Description: How should human rights laws be applied to humanitarian interventions, terrorism, war, globalization, and bioethics? This class will focus on recurring issues in the field of International Relations by examining human rights in law, theory, and practice. Special attention will be paid to institutions and actors involved in the creation and maintenance of human rights.
