Working within the System:
Health Politics in Maryland & Beyond
Date: 4-10-2004
Introduction...
Programa Salud, a student health care initiative of the Johns Hopkins University, is committed to alleviate the cultural and linguistic barriers that many Hispanics and Latinos of Baltimore encounter when seeking medical care. We will be holding our 3rd Annual Student Leadership Conference titled "Working Within the System: Health Politics in Maryland and Beyond".
The purpose of this conference is to increase awareness of the legal issues affecting the health care of this community as well as encouraging other colleges to start their own student health initiatives. Effective December 1, 2003, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene implemented a new policy requiring Maryland progrmas operated or funded by DHMH to ensure equal access to services for individuals with limited English Proficiency. This legislation reflects one of Programa Salud's mission to eliminate linguistic barriers for Hispanic and Latino patients. This new policy led us to focus this year's conference on the impact policies have in access and delivery of health care.
Our conference will consist of two keynote speakers and three workshop speakers. At the general session, the two keynote speakers will focus on the current progress of health policies affecting health care on the federal level. The three workshops’ topics are health politics on the state level, legal issues and rights of immigrants, and how to start your own student health initiative.

Salud Conference for Student Leadership in Cultural Competency
>>>PHOTOS<<<
- Date: Saturday, April 6, 2002
- Time: Registration begins at 9am. Conference ends at 1pm.
- Location: JHU Mattin Center
- Program: A large group presentation by leaders in the arena of Baltimore Hispanic/Latino Healthcare will be followed by the participants’ choice of 2 out of 3 small group sessions.
- Topics will include:
- The Hispanic/Latino Community in Baltimore: Who? What?! Where? When?
- Barriers to Healthcare: What are they and how can we break them down?
- How to Start a Campus Health Initiative
In our first attempt to expand our projects to the rest of the community, Salud has decided to host a spring conference, titled: Salud Conference for Student Leadership in Cultural Competency. This conference will allow Hopkins undergraduates to take a leadership role in enhancing student volunteer experiences both on campus and in other schools.>
Participant schools will include UMBC, Towson University, Loyola College and Goucher College, and speakers from Union Memorial Hospital (health professionals that have benefited from our program, and bilingual health care providers), our liaison from the Baltimore City Department of Health, and Hispanic health care trainers from our Workshop Projects will be invited.
The style of the conference will be in the form of a day of seminars and workshops, and Salud estimates an audience of 200 people from a total of 9 schools. This conference provides a great opportunity for Salud members to not only participate in active volunteer work, but also to educate their peers in other schools on the importance of teamwork and student power in achieving our ultimate goal of reducing the disparity in our community and spreading the message of cultural competency.
The Salud Student Conference is sponsored by the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association, the Johns Hopkins Office of Volunteer services, the Johns Hopkins Dean of Student Life, and the Johns Hopkins Office of Pre-Professional Advising.
