Interpretation services
Volunteers will serve as a means of facilitating communication between non-English-speaking Hispanic patients and their health providers. Students are expected to contribute at least 3 hours a week: 2-hour shift of volunteering and approximately 1 hour for transportation. Excellent Spanish and knowledge of basic medical terms is necessary.
Requirements:
- 2 hours/ week; 234 hours/ semester
- Go through interview process

- 9/29-10/3 Interview interested volunteers
- 10/6-10 Visit clinic, introduce staff, choose schedule for volunteers
- 10/13-17 Initiate volunteering
- 10/20-24 Volunteering
- 10/27-31 First “charla”, topic chosen by volunteers
- 11/3-7 Volunteering
- 11/10-14 Volunteering
- 11/17-21 Second “charla”, topic chosen by volunteers
- 11/24-28 Thanksgiving week, volunteers will volunteer if available
- 12/1-5 Last week of fall volunteering
Goals:
- Make an impact in the Hispanic community of Baltimore by breaking the language barriers that keep them from obtaining proper medical care
- Encourage those in the medical profession to take action towards this nationwide social problem
- Promote cultural awareness among the volunteers partaking in the project
- Promote well-being and health in underprivileged communities of Baltimore
