Our History
Salud was founded in the Spring of 2001, by 4 students inspired to act on the needs of the Hispanic/Latino community in Baltimore. Yussein Aguirre, Melissa de Jesús, María del Pilar Ortega, and Rumana Rahman worked with the JHU administration and the Baltimore City Health Department’s Hispanic Liaison, Angelo Solera, to give this "idea" a start.
What started as a means for a few students to contribute to the Hispanic/Latino community through their Spanish skills has become a university-wide endeavor supported by JHU’s Office of Volunteer Services. Although Salud was first envisioned as an interpretation program for local clinics and hospitals, it quickly grew into a balanced project that did much more than interpret.
During the Fall of 2001, Salud acquired over 60 JHU undergraduate members, initiated 4 projects, and elected its first board of directors.
