Guidelines for Members
- Programa Salud
- Homewood Initiative for Hispanic/Latino Healthcare in Baltimore
- New program at JHU under the Center for Social Concern
- Branch of Baltimore City Health Department's Hispanic and Latino Healthcare Project
- Joined in its efforts by similar projects at other colleges
- Purposes
- to alleviate healthcare problems of the Hispanic population in Baltimore by targeting healthcare providers and educating them in issues of cultural competency so they are equipped to meet needs of diverse groups of patients.
- to provide services for Hispanic Latinos through educational workshops, speakers, health outreach, interpretation services, health fairs, and dissemination of Spanish health materials.
- to increase student awareness of the healthcare issues facing Latino/Hispanics and stimulate involvement on Homewood campus and other college campuses.
- Activities
- present a series of cultural competency workshops hosted various clinics and health professional schools.
- establish interpretation services at local clinics and hospitals.
- work with Baltimore City Health Department annual Health Fair.
- establish a health education program for Hispanic children, parents, and young adults in the Baltimore community
- volunteer as street outreach workers to educate the Hispanic/Latino community about HIV/AIDS and other STIs (sexually transmitted infections)
- spring student conference
- Membership
- open to all members of Johns Hopkins University community, including undergraduate and graduate schools.
- to be an active member of Salud
- attend at least 4 meetings each semester
- volunteer in at least 2 events each semester.
- Meetings
- meetings separated into board meeting and general meeting
- board meeting will be hold once a week or on a biweekly basis.
- project meetings will meet at the time and place agreed upon between the project leader and the volunteers of that specific project.
- general body meetings will be held at the end of every month to review the past events and prepare for future activities.
- Organization
- made up of general body and Salud board.
- each board member will be in charge of a specific project or specific function of the organization. Members of general body will assist them in projects.
- Salud board consists of: Fundraising/Treasurer, Public Relations, Cultural Competency Workshops, Interpretation Services, Children’s Health Education, Adult Health Education and Outreach, Health Fairs, Webmaster, Grants, Program Coordinator
- Duties of each board member - subject to modification, development, and branching by the responsible board member
- Coordinator
- attend each board meeting
- be responsible for supervising and administrating Salud
- be primary contact for organization
- conduct elections in the spring semester for appointment of new board members
- onduct weekly board meetings and monthly general body meetings
- Funding/Treasurer
- contact with Carol Mac, the Budget Coordinator at the Center for Social Concern
- organize three fundraising events per semester
- organize and record all expenses and keep all receipts in SALUD budget folder
- give monthly budget updates to Board
- organize semester budget report for Office of Social Concern
- be primary financial contact for organization
- Public Relations
- make advertisements and coordinate postering on campus for Salud General Body meetings
- identify contacts and organizations at other Baltimore and Maryland colleges with whom to collaborate
- contact campus and local press and advertisements to announce major Salud events
- update and maintain master contact list for all Salud projects
- be primary publicity contact for organization
- Cultural Competency Workshops
- identify hospitals, clinics, and health professional schools interested in holding workshops
- identify and contact potential speakers and caterers
- identify sufficient student volunteers to run the workshop
- coordinate workshop date/time with partner organizational staff
- organize, update, and present materials with updated information for workshop participants
- choose presentation topics - evaluate and revise presentations
- provide a protocol for workshops that include evaluation to track progress of the project
- submit monthly reports and project evaluations to the Program Coordinator for review and for Salud records
- receive evaluation from Project Site supervisor
- make necessary improvements and revisions to improve quality of service
- Interpretation Services
- work with Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and School of Nursing students
- coordinate interpreter schedule
- maintain contact with hospital staff for needed equipment and feedback
- make sure that hospital personnel are aware of interpreter availability through
- find medical interpretation training workshops and opportunities for volunteers
- Health Education Project Leaders
- maintain contacts with partner organizations to schedule workshop dates
- hold one monthly workshop at site
- organize and update workshop materials and information for participants
- find speakers to host monthly workshop sessions
- choose presentation topics - evaluate and revise presentations
- provide a protocol for workshops that include evaluation to track progress of the project
- submitt monthly reports and project evaluations to the Program Coordinator for review and for Salud records
- receive evaluation from Project Site supervisor
- make necessary improvements and revisions to improve quality of service
- Grants
- research and complete grant applications for Salud projects and activities
- meet with Center for Social Concern and Dean Boswell to approve grant applications
- primary contact for grant information for organization
- Webmaster
- update and maintain website
- upload updated information and photographs to photo gallery
- update monthly calendar
- set-up FormBuddy for Spring conference
- Secretary
- take meeting minutes at Board and General Body meetings
- send minute meetings to Coordinator and all board members
- copy agenda for Board and General Body meetings
- organize monthly calendar for website
- have organized attendance sheets for all General Body meetings
- update and organize ListProc email
- have binder will copies of all attendance sheets, meeting agendas, and meeting minutes
- Project Assistants
- active support for Project leader
- be present at all project meetings
- be present at all partner meetings with project leader
- maintain contact list for specific project
- maintain attendance sheet for each event
- Election Guidelines
- Rules during election process
- voters must be active members of Salud
- members interested in becoming part of Board must have participating in the conference in order to be eligible for the position.
- elections held in April during academic year
- active member can nominate him or herself or another active member of Salud
- nominee has right to refuse a nomination
- elections will be held by written ballot
- all nominees cannot vote during voting process for their position
- all nominees can vote for all board positions
- if a tie occurs, a run off election will be held
- Term of office
- elected board members will serve Salud for full year term which begins after induction into office in April until the following April after new elections are held
- Impeachment
- a board member can removed from the board if he or she is incompetent, habitually absent from board and general meetings, or does not fulfill requirements of position - board member may defend him or herself during meeting
- 2/3 of general body and 2/3 of board body must vote to impeach board member from his or her position
- any active member may call for impeachment of a board member with substantiating evidenc
- vacancies
- if a board position becomes vacant through impeachment or resignation, a special election will be held at next meeting according to the election guidelines
- newly elected officer will immediately take over duties of the specific board position
