Health Education for Children
In attempts to expand Salud’s outreach into the community, we plan to work with Baltimore City schools, local colleges, and children’s health advocacy organizations. Under a new federal campaign, No Child Left Behind, children are entitled to a nurturing lifestyle, health care, and education. Since Latinos are more likely to lack medical insurance, Latino/Hispanic children unjustly suffer from the lack of services and care to which they are entitled.
In response to this injustice, Salud has started nutrition workshops at Programma Carrera in which we educate middle school students about food, exercise, and related diseases. We continue collaborating with Goucher College’s HOLA in organizing a High School Student Leadership Conference in which Salud discusses teen health and STDs. We have recently started a partnership with the Coalition to End Childhood Lead Poisoning to hold lead education and prevention workshops for parents of Grupo de Los Padre Latinos.
