Health Education for Adults
Salud’s adult health education program consists of monthly workshops that educate the hispanic and latino population of Baltimore about their health and steps they can take to improve it. This educational component was added last year, in which Salud volunteers present on various health topics to a group of ESOL students at the Anne E. Casey Family Services Center in East Baltimore. These presentations typically last one hour and are done in both English and Spanish, with a slightly greater emphasis in Spanish. The usually include a presentation by a Johns Hopkins health professional from the faculty of the public health or medical school and are followed by supplemental activities to improve comprehension and development of English skills. Topics have included diabetes, nutrition, heart disease, and other health concerns of the hispanic and general adult population. Adult health volunteers assist with invitation of speakers to make presentations, development of supplemental materials for the class and participation in the class workshops each month. The next (and last) workshop for the semester will be on November 20th.
