This course introduces students to the principles of developing and delivering effective oral presentations.  Students practice these skills in a variety of contexts and submit written documents (speaking scripts) to accompany them.

SCIENTIFIC WRITING (3) Stone   Limit 18   Students write original work, critique articles for content and style, and present work to class. They improve written work that requires synthesis and evaluation. The goal is to weld critical thinking to compelling writing.

WRITING FOR THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS (3) Berlinski Limit 18    Students will write a variety of papers including a personal statement, resume, cover letter, and a medical research paper, in order to gain an understanding of composition.

LEGAL COMMUNICATION (3) Winett   Limit 18     This course is for students interested in understanding communication in the legal profession.  Emphasis is placed on legal reasoning and professional standards of communication.  Students learn principles of legal reasoning and writing.

PRONUNCIATION Inukai Limit 18 This course helps international graduate students pursue advanced degrees, present research, and teach undergraduate courses. DISSERTATION WRITING WORKSHOP Dunfee  Prereq: 661.610 or Perm. Req’d
Limit 18  The workshop provides instruction and mentoring in writing and organization to graduate students presenting research in journal articles, dissertations, theses, or conference papers.  Each student is expected to do substantial writing and editing of professional documents during the semester.   Not open to Undergraduates

GRANT AND CONTRACT PROPOSAL WRITING Dunfee      Limit 18   This course addresses the writing of advocacy-based documents such as fellowship applications, research grant applications, and proposals for contracts.  Graduate students interested in issues associated with successful funding and/or fellowship applications would benefit from this course. Not open to Undergraduates
