CUBA AND U.S. DECISION MAKING (3) Smith

This course consists of a series of case studies in U.S. decision making related to Cuba from 1959 to the present, everything from the initial decision signed by Eisenhower to launch efforts to remove the Castro government (which led to the Bay of Pigs) to President Bush’s decision this past May to launch new measures to remove the Castro regime.

DO YOU WANT FRIES WITH THAT? A HISTORY OF FOOD AND EATING IN AMERICA (3) Northcott  Perm Req'd. Limit 20   An exploration of anthropological perspectives on food consumption in contemporary America.  Students will be involved in an on-going field project collecting eating histories and surveying customers at local grocery stores in two Baltimore neighborhoods. INDEPENDENT STUDY - HISTORY OF AFRICAN AMERICANS AT JHU WEBSITE PROJECT This project is a collaborative effort to develop a web-based exhibit documenting the African American experience at JHU. The project, focusing on African American contributions and experiences, will enrich the Hopkins history by developing a more complete record of the contributions and value provided by the presence of African Americans at Hopkins and by providing the JHU community with information that is generally not known. Students research one subject and tells the story using a number of media including text, photographs, audio files (oral history), images of documentation and video.   The time frame (one or two semesters) of the independent study will be determined by Dr. Knight, the faculty advisor and the student.
