ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORY (3) Schoenberger Formerly listed as 570.632. Environmental history explores long-term interactions
between social change and environmental transformation, or
the ways in which societies modify landscapes and are themselves
affected by geological, climatological and changing ecological
conditions. This reading seminar considers classic and more
recent contributions to this endeavor. Cross-listed with

DECISION
MODELING FOR CONSERVATION (3) Williams Prereq: upper level undergrads with mathematics background (i.e. intro. courses
in calculus, linear algebra, statistics, and/or operations
research). This course examines quantitative methods and models
for making land use planning, management, and policy decisions
when conservation is a primary objective. The topics covered
include reserve design modeling (including marine reserves),
other models for habitat managment and restoration, land allocation
models for environmental protection and economic development,
and forest models for both harvesting and biological conservation.
Decision/optimization models as well as some related simulation
models are covered. Underpinnings from landscape ecology,
conservation biology, population dynamics, hydrology, and
economics are used to motivate model formulation. Emphasis
is on spatially explicit modeling including issues of spatial
scale. Modeling forms include linear, non-linear, discrete,
probalistic, and multi-objective approaches. Emphasis is on
problem description and model formulation. Some discussion
of the technical methods of solution is provided. Course
