ACTING AND DIRECTING WORKSHOP I (3) Astin / Dunn Limit 12 per section     Formerly 220.300     An introduction to the fundamentals of acting through exercises, improvisation and work on scenes from established plays, based on the teachings of Stanislavsky, Greet, Michael Chekhov, Clurman and Uta Hagen.

ACTING AND DIRECTING WORKSHOP II (3) Astin / Dunn  Limit 10  Prereq: 220.301 or Perm. Req’d. Formerly 220.301   The Sanford Meisner repetition exercises are introduced. They form the basis of Workshop II. The Uta Hagen exercises are also pursued. As in Workshop I, the principal classroom activities will consist of scene work, exercises, lectures, and discussion. Some rehearsal will also take place during school hours. It is expected that substantial out-of-class time be spent on rehearsals and exercises.  Sec.02 added 04/08/05

ACTING AND DIRECTING WORKSHOP III (3) Astin    Limit 10  Prereq: 220.301 or Perm. Req’d. Formerly 220.302    Special attention is given to the development of spontaneity and emotional freedom using the principles of Workshops I and II. Hands on work with John Astin's "The Process" and the second Silverberg workbook are employed, along with the Uta Hagen text. Boleslavsky and Michael Chekhov are introduced.  The Clurman, Meisner, Stanislavsky and Strasberg approaches are included. Substantial out of class time is required.

DIRECTING SEMINAR (3) Glossman   Limit 12 
Formerly 220.301.02 and 220.302.02 Fundamentals of mounting, casting and staging the play; various theories of directing; students must commit to a practical lab. It is understood that students have a working familiarity with acting fundamentals.

PLAY PRODUCTION AND STAGEMANAGEMENT (3) Astin / Staff    Formerly 220.209   Students will learn the basics of producing a play, including play selection, budgeting, organization and management of the staff during both the pre-rehearsal and rehearsal periods.  The second half of the semester will detail the job of the stage manager and participate in lab activities outside of class hours. Course canceled 09/07/05
