INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF FILMS (3) DeLibero   Lab Fee: $40  Limit 60 40   A survey of the history of film from its origins to the present. Students learn the critical and aesthetic vocabulary of film and study key films in weekly screenings.

INTRODUCTION TO VISUAL LANGUAGE (3) Yasinsky   Limit 10 Lab Fee: $40   Introduction to the aesthetics and meanings of moving images. Films and video art - by Murneau, Bresson, Lynch, Nauman, etc. - screened to analyze sound, picture, editing. With video project.

INTRODUCTION TO FILM PRODUCTION (3) Mann   Limit 9 Lab Fee: $100 Perm. Req’d. An introduction to 16mm film production. Working in groups of three, students produce a short, black and white, silent film. All editing is performed on a 16mm flat bed editor.

INTERMEDIATE FILM PRODUCTION (3) Mann    Limit 9    Lab Fee: $100     Perm. Req'd Prereq: 061.240 Intermediate Film Production introduces sound to the film basics learned in Introduction to Film Production. Working individually, students complete a short 16mm (negative) accompanied by a non-synchronous sound track.

WRITING THE SCREENPLAY (3) Roper   Limit 15   Prereq: Expository Writing or Intro to Fiction & Poetry   Course is a rigorous introduction to writing in screenplay form, based on writing exercises, the reading of scripts, and the screening of popular films.

ÉCUSLÖMÖTL: EXTREME CLOSE-UPS, SLOW-MOTION, AND TIME LAPSE VIS A VIS JEAN EPSTEIN (3) Mann  Lab Fee: $100   Preference to Seniors Limit 9    Prereq: 061.240  Extreme close-ups, slow-motion, and time-lapse: this is a theory/filmmaking course exploring Jean Epstein's ideas in "the soul of cinema." Using only these filmic elements, each student completes a short film.
