INTRODUCTION TO TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION (3) Inukai/James Mir  Limit 18 per section Students learn to meet the challenges of communicating special or technical knowledge to a variety of audiences. Several types of primary, professional documents, including application letters/resumes, object and process descriptions, instructions, and a variety of long and short reports will be produced. Oral communication skills are introduced and students work on individual and collaborative assignments. Special attention is paid to the basic writing process, exposing students to the latest research on written language while teaching stylistic, organizational, and rhetorical skills.

COMMUNICATION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS (3) Timberlake   Limit 18  (Recommended for International students – though not an ESL class) This course emphasizes issues of international communication as well as effective communication in an English-speaking environment. Students may integrate the required work in their major fields with the expectations of good technical communication. Writing assignments include the cover letter, resume, memos, letters, full-length research reports and oral presentations.

INFORMATION DESIGN (3) Arnold    Limit 18   Introduction to the issues and practices of the process of designing the most transparently useful way of presenting complex information to a variety of users via guidelines and processes that are necessary for understanding how to dissect and then organize complex information so that specific users can access details of information relevant to their needs. LEGAL COMMUNICATION FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS (3) Winett   Limit 18   As the fields of science, engineering, law, and public policy increasingly interact, the need to write documents for audiences concerned with legal issues increases. Students will learn principles of legal reasoning, argumentation, and writing that are common for various audiences like clients, attorneys, colleagues from both inside and outside one’s own organization, and especially regulators of all stripes. Instruction covers both the effective written presentation of the students’ own work and the writing of reports and communication that might generate legal issues from unforeseen audiences.

SCIENTIC WRITING (3) Stone       Limit 18    Prepares students to write scientific articles for publication in professional and non-professional journals. Students read, analyze, and practice writing literature reviews that provide the background and rationale for their work while learning how to describe their methods so professional colleagues can replicate it and non-professional readers find it interesting and compelling.
