WHY FILM MATTERS (3) Staff  Limit 60  Lab Fee: $40  Each week, a different faculty member from the humanities offers his/her take on a specific film in order to explore various approaches to movies and their place in our culture. This introductory course counts as a Film and Media Studies core requirement for majors and minors.

INTRODUCTION TO VISUAL LANGUAGE (3) Yasinsky   Limit 12 Introduction to the aesthetics and meaning of the moving image. Films and video art--by Murnau, Bresson, Lynch, Viola, Nauman, among others--will be screened to analyze sound, picture, editing. Course added 4/9/04.

Req'd.    American setting and identity: the frontier, the city, the highway, the sea, the small town, and outer space in the films of Ford, Wellman, Siegal, Leone, Allen, Spielberg, and others.
