Applications for the Summer and Fall of 2008 are available online. We are only considering applications that are submitted electronically from this website. If you do not have access to a computer, or if for any other reason you cannot use the electronic application, please contact the Post-Bac Program Office to request a paper application. Click here for information and access to our application system. The deadline date for applying to either the summer or fall is March 1, 2008. However, we strongly encourage you to apply by February 1 in order to avoid the possibility of our class becoming filled before we receive your application. We expect to have approximately 25-27 new students in the next class. For your convenience our admissions brochure is also available on this website. The 7th Johns Hopkins Post-Bac Class Starts Program: An exceptional group of 26 students the Johns Hopkins Post-Bac began their studies this summer and fall. They came from 17 states, attended 23 different colleges as undergraduates, and majored in over 22 areas of study. We are honored to welcome this outstanding group of students who all have significant academic honors and experience. Here are some examples of what they've done: Music interests include violin, oboe clarinet, study at the Julliard School of Music and performance with the Los Angeles Jr. Philharmonic. Athletics: students participate on several college varsity sports teams - fencing (2 including a captain), soccer, swimming (academic and all-American) skiing (capt.), equestrian (founder and capt.), cross country (capt.), and crew. Research in a wide variety of areas ranging from history, psychology, neuroscience, public health, vision and medical imaging; 4 have had research positions at the National Institutes of Health - National Cancer Inst., Allergy and Infectious Disease, and 2 in Mental Health; several students have contributed to publications in major journals. Service Activities : almost every student has been involved with significant volunteer work such as Teach for America in the Mississippi Delta, Partners in Health in Haiti and Malawi; Millennium Village Project in Ghana; Himalayan Cataract Project in Tibet, English teaching in Honduras, Ecuador, Togo. and France; 3 Peace Corps volunteers in Zambia, China, and South Africa; and numerous other areas such as Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross, Hospice, EMT and Search and Rescue operations, and several hospital volunteers in various departments; summer camps for disabled children; public health and development work in India, Mexico, and United Arab Emirates; and youth mentoring and literacy programs in the U.S. and abroad. Fellowships: more than 8 students received prestigious national or international fellowships including: Rhodes and Fulbright scholarships. College Activities : all students were engaged in major school activities including: resident, teaching, and lab assistantships; peer mentor and tutoring positions; student judicial boards; representatives on college academic and governance committees; officers in numerous student organizations; editors and writers for college publications. Study Abroad : students attended universities in the following nations: South Africa , Morocco , Italy , France , Israel , Jordan , England , Chile , Ecuador , Singapore , Vietnam , China , and Japan . Other Activities include: an army medic in Iraq , senate and congressional interns and full-time employment in areas such as labor relations, engineering, and business. Post-Bac News: Fifteen Post-bac Students discussed their medical, research and public health interests in a series of 3 Symposia. For more information about these events, click here (Student Symposium section) Morgan Seller, Teddy Holzer, Paul Sonenthal and Jana Freeman published articles in the Johns Hopkins undergraduate public health journal, Epidemic Proportions . Morgan and Teddy also served on the editorial board. Click here for the link to Epidemic Proportions. http://www.jhu.edu/~ep/ Nick Ward presented 4 abstracts at the 2007 American Urological Association annual conference, based on his research on his research on laproscopic radical prostectomy outcomes. Nick has also submitted two papers for publication, with more to follow. Following his "Topics in Modern Medicine" lecture on Hormone Abuse, Dr. Fred Wondisford , professor of pediatric metabolics at the School of Medicine , conducted a series of 4 lunch-time seminars for post-bac student on the subject of how to read medical literature. This well attended and lively seminar gave students helpful suggestions about study habits in medical school and efficient ways to keep informed about developments in medical knowledge. Pritesh Gandhi - completed a Fulbright Fellowship in India during his glide year on a public health project involving sanitation and hygiene practices among children and the development of a health education curriculum. He received a prestigious Albert Schweitzer fellowship this summer and returned to India to work with a microfinance institution as the interim Health Director. Pritesh helped develop an entire health division and directed various public health programs. He recently started his second year in the combined MD/PhD Program at Tufts University . |
