Current Firearms Policy Statements
University-Wide
Statement
Johns Hopkins is fully committed to maintaining a safe
campus environment. The possession or use of firearms, pellet
weapons,
knives,
or other dangerous
weapons,
except under the
supervision of authorized University or Hospital personnel, is
strictly forbidden on University and Hospital premises.
Statement for Homewood Students
The possession or use of firearms and pellet weapons, except
under the supervision of authorized University personnel, is
strictly forbidden on University premises. Disciplinary action
involving any student charged with violation of this rule is the
sole responsibility of the Dean of Students and may result in the
suspension or expulsion of the student.
Statement for the Peabody Institute
The possession or use of firearms and pellet weapons is
strictly forbidden on Peabody Institute premises and may result
in the suspension or expulsion of the student.
Statement for Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions
Policy
In order to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors,
students and staff, the carrying or use of any weapon on the
premises of The Johns Hopkins Hospital is prohibited. THIS WEAPON
PROHIBITION EXTENDS TO ALL PERSONS, EXCEPT AS NOTED, INCLUDING
PERSONS WITH APPROVED STATE OF MARYLAND HANDGUN PERMITS.
VIOLATION OF THIS POLICY WILL RESULT IN AN INVESTIGATION AND
APPROPRIATE DISCIPLINARY ACTION TO INCLUDE TERMINATION OF
EMPLOYMENT.
Safety in the work environment is the responsibility of every
employee. Any incident involving a patient, visitor, student or
staff member in possession of a weapon, as defined by this
policy, should be reported to the Security Communications Center
at 410-955-5585.
Definition: A weapon is anything readily capable of lethal
use and possessed under circumstances not appropriate for lawful
activity. The Annotated Code of Maryland defines a weapon as:
firearms, knives, clubs, metal knuckles, razors or any object
that is used to threaten, menace or injure. The policy of The
Johns Hopkins Hospital also prohibits the possession of any
ammunition for firearms.
Policy Exceptions:
1. Sworn officers of public law enforcement agencies.
2. Correctional officers.
3. Chief, Corporate Security Services and Directors of
Security for JHMI provided all State of Maryland requirements are
in adherence.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ARE HANDGUNS PERMITTED WITHIN PSYCHIATRIC
TREATMENT AREAS (EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF POLICY EMERGENCIES)
WITHOUT THE APPROVAL OF THE CHIEF, CORPORATE SECURITY SERVICES IN
CONSULTATION WITH THE CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER (COO), ATTENDING
PSYCHIATRIST, AND THE CLINICAL DIRECTOR OR HIS/HER DESIGNEE.

Responsibilities:

Report all incidents where it is believed that a weapon has
been brought onto the property of JHH. |
Security Communications
Center Personnel |
Advise the Security Operations Manager/Supervisor of the
incident and dispatch an off-duty Baltimore City Police Office to
the location to conduct a preliminary investigation. |
Security Operations
Manager/Supervisor |
Respond to the location of an armed person to coordinate the
response and investigation.
Ensure appropriate notification and reporting is completed.
Secure legally possessed weapons in the Security Operations
Center Property Room. |
| Chief, Corporate Security Services |
Coordinate and ensure that an investigation of all incidents
in violation of JHH Weapons Policy is completed. |
| Department Management |
Review the investigation of the incident provided by the
Office of Corporate Security services and take the necessary
appropriate disciplinary action against any employee after
consultation with the Director, Employee/Labor Relations. |

Responsible for the fair and consistent administration of
disciplinary policy when appropriate. |
