1995 Commencement and Diploma Ceremony
Information
Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, D-Md., will be the main commencement
speaker at The Johns Hopkins University on Thursday, May 25. Her
Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand, one of the honorary degree
recipients, will also speak briefly.
The ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. on the upper quadrangle at the
Homewood campus of the university at 3400 N. Charles Street in
Baltimore.
Details: No special credentialing is
anticipated, but we would
appreciate knowing you intend to come so we can hold sufficient
space in the media section. Call the contacts listed above; also,
please call if you would like directions to campus faxed to you.
The site will be under a tent and will not be changed in case of
bad weather. A mult box will be available.
Other notes: Sen. Mikulski, who has a niece and
a
nephew in the
graduating class, and Queen Sirikit are among five persons who
will be awarded the honorary degree of doctor of humane
letters.
The other recipients:
- Chung Ju Yung, founder and honorary chairman, Hyundai
Business Group.
- Ted Koppel, anchor, ABC News "Nightline."
- Lucile P. Leone, former assistant surgeon general and first
chief nurse of the U.S. Public Health Service.
The total number of degrees, certificates and diplomas
awarded is expected to be 4,389. Of those, 1,068 are bachelor's
degrees, 2,818 are master's degrees and 452 are doctoral or
medical.
A separate diploma distribution ceremony for the 777
graduating seniors in the School of Arts and Sciences and the
School of Engineering will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the same
location as the morning commencement. The speaker will be Ted
Koppel, anchor of ABC's "Nightline." Koppel, a 31-year veteran of
ABC News, has won every major broadcasting award, including 23
Emmy Awards and two Sigma Delta Chi Awards, the highest honor
bestowed for public service by the Society of Professional
Journalists.
Note: Other Johns Hopkins University divisions
will be holding
diploma ceremonies, or other commencement-related activities, at
the following times and locations. Several of the speakers are
prominent figures in government, business and the arts and are
potentially newsworthy. Contact the public
