Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health
Fact Sheet

Johns Hopkins & Global Health: The causes and effects of many health problems — infectious, environmental, lifestyle-related or due to man-made or natural disasters — are becoming increasingly global in nature. Integrated approaches, which harness the expertise of large and diverse groups of health and medical professionals, are essential to research and to implementation of effective preventive and interventional responses. The Johns Hopkins medical, nursing and public health community has significant human resources in the clinical, research, programmatic, policy and educational domains, and an extensive network of international colleagues and collaborators. The Johns Hopkins University also has an outstanding history of leadership in shaping large-scale and global education and research. In order to continue realizing the full potential of this collective expertise and energy, the university recognizes the need to enhance interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative approaches and a congruent approach to seeking implementation funds.

Mission Statement: The Johns Hopkins Center for Global Health harnesses the extensive leadership and expertise of three Johns Hopkins University institutions — the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the School of Medicine, and the School of Nursing — to address global health challenges.

The center provides a forum for innovative, informed and visionary thinking about global health issues in the 21st century. It promotes collaboration; marshals resources for research, policy and programmatic initiatives; recruits dynamic faculty and other professionals; and trains the next generation of leaders in global health.

Governance: The center will be governed jointly by the deans of the Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health, School of Medicine and School of Nursing. The director will initially report to the Bloomberg School's dean, Michael J. Klag. The center's staff will also work with an executive advisory committee, as well as with internal and external advisory committees, to define key global health problems.

Affiliated Faculty: More than 100 faculty members will work closely with the center, but virtually all Johns Hopkins faculty members currently working in international health (approximately 600) will be affiliated with the center. Faculty will continue to hold primary appointments within their current departments.

Center Staff: The center has a director, Tom Quinn, and eventually will have three associate directors tasked and appointed by the dean of each respective school, as well as an additional eight full-time staff members. The staff will have offices on the East Baltimore campus, which is central to all three schools and The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System.

Funding: The deans of the Bloomberg School of Public Health, School of Medicine and School of Nursing have committed funds to launch the Center for Global Health. Currently, Johns Hopkins is awarded approximately $500 million in international health funding each year from various sources. Staff will also seek additional donations for the center.
