Statement from Johns Hopkins University
on Stem Cell Vote

The following statement on today's Senate passage of H.R. 810 may be attributed to C. Michael Armstrong, chairman of the board of trustees of Johns Hopkins Medicine; William R. Brody, president of The Johns Hopkins University; and Edward D. Miller, dean of the medical faculty and CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine.

This is a tremendous step forward for biomedical research. We at Johns Hopkins applaud the Senate for its careful consideration of federal stem cell policy, and are particularly grateful to the proponents of H.R. 810 in the Senate, whose dedication and hard work will help pave the way for new treatments.

Embryonic stem cells hold great promise for mending damaged tissues and curing disease. It is vital that federal policy enable researchers to fulfill this promise while carefully balancing the ethical and medical considerations associated with stem cell research. We believe Congress' action on H.R. 810 reflects this balance.
