A Message from the Dean of the GWC Whiting
School of Engineering
On Saturday morning, five graduate students of the
Whiting School of Engineering were involved in a very serious
car accident.
Three of the five students died from their injuries. All of the
students involved in the accident were international students
originally from India. The three students who did not survive
were Bhavesh Gandhi (ECE), Jithesh Parameswaran (CS), and
Swaminathan Jayaraman (MSE).
In addition, two students involved in the accident were taken to
Maryland Shock Trauma Center. As of Sunday evening,
Veeraraghavan Venkataramani (ECE) was scheduled for release from
the hospital and Abhishek Agarwal (CS) is listed in serious but
stable condition and is recovering from leg injuries.
We are shocked and saddened by the news that three of our
students have died and two more were injured. I am sure that
this tragic loss will touch everyone on the Homewood campus, and
most particularly the faculty and students from
Electrical and
Computer Engineering,
Computer Science, and
Materials Science and
Engineering Departments, the home departments of the graduate
students involved in the accident.
We are currently working with the families and close friends of
the students to accommodate their needs. As this process moves
forward we will continue to work with them and with the Indian
student organization to plan a suitable memorial for the deceased
students. Once plans for a memorial ceremony are set we will
make the information public so that all of us who are touched by
this tragic loss may come together as a community.
