3 Students Killed, 2 Injured in
Car Accident over Thanksgiving Weekend
The Security Department regrets to
inform the Hopkins Community of the death of three
G.W.C. Whiting School of Engineering male
graduate students who died in a
single vehicle accident in Howard County, Maryland as
they were returning from Thanksgiving break:
Swaminathan Jayaraman, Department of Material
Science and Engineering
Bhavesh Gandhi, Department of Electrical and
Computer Engineering
Jithesh Parameswaran, Department of Computer
Science
At 4:34 AM Saturday November 28, the vehicle, a 1997
Ford Escort rental, left the roadway of northbound I-95
near Rt. 895 by the right side and struck an overpass
support abutment. The three named students died at the
scene of the accident. Two other male graduate students
who were in the vehicle, also with the G. W. C. Whiting
School of Engineering, survived the accident and were
transported to Shock Trauma. (Both remain hospitalized at
this time.)
Several key academic and administrative staff members
joined together over the weekend to provide assistance
to the survivors and to the families, fellow students
and friends of the deceased. A fellow graduate student
in the Computer Science Department greatly assisted
Maryland State Police by making the initial contact with
the next-of-kin in India.
Arrangements have been made for the students' bodies to
be returned to India in accord with their families'
wishes. The deceased now rest at the Arlington Funeral
Home in Arlington, Virginia awaiting transport
to their homes in India. The Embassy of India has
provided guidance in making these arrangements. The
Arlington Funeral Home, 3901 Fairfax Drive, Arlington,
VA 22203-1697 can be reached at (703)-522-1441.
The members of the Security Department offer their
condolences to the families and friends of these
students and to the faculty and staff of the School of
Engineering.
