During 1995, the library will begin to transfer about 600,000 low-use volumes to the new facility. Each year thereafter, the library will transfer about 40,000 volumes--the equivalent of what it adds annually--to maintain the Eisenhower stacks at a no-growth state.

The library staff recognizes that moving a significant portion of the library's collections will change the way readers gain access to material, and in designing the off-campus shelving program, three programmatic goals have been identified:

minimize the impact that distance and lack of direct physical access to collections will have on readers' ability to use collections both on campus and through Interlibrary loan

provide quick and efficient delivery of and access to materials shelved off-campus

provide a physical environment and handling procedures that will give materials appropriate preservation protection

Soon, members of the library's Resource Services Department will begin working with the academic departments to refine the lists of materials identified as candidates to be moved off-campus. In addition, all materials identified for transfer will have a note placed in their Janus online catalog record to alert readers that they are candidates for transfer.
