Eisenhower Library Adds Off-Campus ShelvingDuring 1995, the library will begin to transfer about 600,000 low-use volumes to the new facility. Each year thereafter, the library will transfer about 40,000 volumes--the equivalent of what it adds annually--to maintain the Eisenhower stacks at a no-growth state. The library staff recognizes that moving a significant portion of the library's collections will change the way readers gain access to material, and in designing the off-campus shelving program, three programmatic goals have been identified: minimize the impact that distance and lack of direct physical access to collections will have on readers' ability to use collections both on campus and through Interlibrary loan provide quick and efficient delivery of and access to materials shelved off-campus provide a physical environment and handling procedures that will give materials appropriate preservation protection Soon, members of the library's Resource Services Department will begin working with the academic departments to refine the lists of materials identified as candidates to be moved off-campus. In addition, all materials identified for transfer will have a note placed in their Janus online catalog record to alert readers that they are candidates for transfer. Readers wishing to request retention of any item so identified will need to speak with the Resource Services Librarian responsible for that item: economics; business and management: Maureen Beck x8767, beck@milton.mse.jhu.edu biology; biophysics; psychology; linguistics cognitive science; life sciences: Michael Tepin x8346, tepin@milton.mse.jhu.edu government publications; maps; law: Jim Gillispie x8360, jeg@jhuvms.hcf.jhu.edu history; philosophy; women's studies; political science; anthropology; sociology: Thomas Izbicki x7173, izbicki@milton.mse.jhu.edu library science: David James x8332, james_dw@jhuvm.hcf.jhu.edu chemistry; earth and planetary science; geography and environmental engineering; physics and astronomy: Jane Keefer x4156, keeefer@milton.mse.jhu.edu history of art; music; Near Eastern studies: William Keller x8778, wkeller@milton.mse.jhu.edu education: Todd Kelley x4930, KELLEY@MILTON.MSE.JHU.EDU classics; romance languages; Latin American literature: Elizabeth Kirk x8279, ekirk@milton.mse.jhu.edu English; German; comparative literature; film and media studies; writing seminars: Susanna Pathak x6876, pathak@milton.mse.jhu.edu chemical engineering; mechanical engineering; civil engineering; materials science and engineering; biomedical engineering: Karla Pearce x4153, pearce@milton.mse.jhu.edu computer science; electrical/computer engineering; mathematics; math sciences: James Farrugia x8357, farrugia@milton.mse.jhu.edu history of science: Deborah Slingluff x8254, slingluf@milton.mse.jhu.edu During the coming year, library staff will develop and announce the services and operations for the off-campus facility.
