Dr. Johnson, who earned a doctorate in educational administration/higher education from the University of South Carolina in 1993, has devoted his 12-year professional career to student affairs and is highly regarded within the field, according to Larry Benedict, dean of Homewood student services. "I'm delighted that we've been able to attract someone with the credentials of Dr. Johnson," Dr. Benedict said. "An experienced professional in his field and nationally known in the student affairs profession, he is going to be a wonderful addition to our staff and to the Hopkins community."

At South Carolina, Dr. Johnson was responsible for coordinating and implementing programs and services for the minority student population, as well as advising African-American student organizations. His innovations included a peer program pairing incoming minority freshmen with upperclassmen and a graduate school fair for minority students.

"Co-curricular education in many instances provides learning outside the classroom that parallels what's being learned inside the classroom," Dr. Johnson said. "It's important that we give minority students a sense of belonging and confidence, so that they will participate and make a difference in the campus community.

"I look forward to evaluating the programs at Hopkins, and adding new programs where appropriate, so that we can continue to better serve multicultural students here," Dr. Johnson added.

In addition to his doctorate, Dr. Johnson earned a bachelor of arts degree in speech/language pathology from the University of Alabama in 1981, and a master of science degree in student personnel administration from Florida State University in 1982.

He is president-elect of the Southern Association for College Student Affairs (SACSA), and a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.

His Ph.D. dissertation, "Factors in the Academic Success of African-American College Males," earned him the 1993 Dissertation of the Year Award from SACSA.
