Yash Gupta, inaugural dean of the Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School, has been elected to the board of directors of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the global accrediting organization for business schools.

Gupta's three-year term on the governing body of the association, also known as AACSB International, will begin on July 1.

John J. Fernandes, president and chief executive officer of AACSB International, congratulated Gupta on "this outstanding achievement, particularly in light of the remarkably competent nominees selected by the nominating committee."

"With this result, the membership has demonstrated their confidence in Dean Gupta as a trusted and worthy representative of their interests," Fernandes said. "This is an exciting time to serve on the AACSB International board of directors, as we have many compelling initiatives under way. We look forward to the privilege of Dean Gupta's valued leadership." Gupta said it was a privilege to be chosen to serve the organization.

"AACSB is the oldest and most prestigious organization speaking on behalf of business schools and business education," he said, "dealing not only with issues of accreditation but also with issues involving the top leaders from institutions worldwide."

Founded in 1916, AACSB International is an association of more than 1,100 educational institutions, businesses, and other organizations in 70 countries that are dedicated to the advancement of business education worldwide. AACSB International is the longest-serving and largest global accrediting body for business schools offering undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees in business and accounting. The association also is the business education community's professional development organization, conducting a wide array of conference and seminar programs at various locations around the world.

To achieve accreditation, business programs must satisfy the expectations of a wide range of quality standards relating to strategic management of resources, interactions of faculty and students in the educational process, and achievement of learning goals in degree programs.

Gupta, who assumed the deanship of the Carey Business School on Jan. 1, most recently served as dean of the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business from 2004 to 2006. Prior to that appointment, Gupta was dean of the University of Washington Business School from 1999 to 2004; he headed the College of Business and Administration at the University of Colorado at Denver from 1992 to 1999.
