News Release
Artist-in-Residence at Evergreen The Johns Hopkins University's Evergreen House announces the selection of Pennsylvania-based performance artist Martha L. McDonald as its next "House Guest." McDonald is the first performance-based artist in the museum's highly acclaimed, seven-year-old artist-in-residence program. The selection was made by Gerald Ross, director of exhibitions at the Maryland Institute College of Art. The annual two-month summer residency is open to a visual artist living outside Maryland. Throughout June and July, McDonald will enjoy access to the extraordinary and diverse collections of Evergreen, and find inspiration in the lives of former female residents Alice Whitridge Garrett and Alice Warder Garrett for the creation of new performance pieces. McDonald's unique performance form blends singing of baroque music with mock lecture/demonstrations, original monologues, humor, and handcrafted sculptural elements and costumes to transmit stories and ideas. She inserts her autobiographical narrative into the stories of mythological and historic characters in comic and poignant ways to seduce the audience to experience the seemingly arcane music and stories of classical mythology and history in new and relevant ways. At once an intimate collection of fine and decorative art and a vibrant, innovative venue for contemporary artists, Evergreen is open to the public through guided tours offered on the hour 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (the last tour departs at 3 p.m.). The museum is located at 4545 N. Charles St. in North Baltimore and has free and ample parking. Public transport routes include the MTA bus No. 11 and the Collegetown Shuttle (debark at Loyola). For more information, the public may call 410-516-0341 or visit www.jhu.edu/historichouses.
