Media Advisory
Approximately 100 juniors and seniors in Baltimore's public high schools will learn the ins and outs of the admissions process, financial aid and college life from the experts — Johns Hopkins University undergraduates — at the second annual Excel Youth Conference on the university's Homewood campus. Hosted by the Black Student Union and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the idea is to help students from minority groups find out about higher education opportunities in their own backyard, such as the Baltimore Scholars Program, under which Johns Hopkins provides full-tuition scholarships to graduates of Baltimore City public schools accepted into the university's undergraduate programs. (More information at http://www.jhu.edu/news/home04/jun04/pdf/scholars.pdf). Admissions representatives from various colleges, including Towson University and UMBC, will be present. Workshops and a tour of campus will round out the day's events. Student organizers say they hope the conference will forge a connection between Johns Hopkins and city residents.
