More than 300 Maryland teachers and school administrators will participate in a day-long interactive conference showcasing professional development practices linked to school improvement and student achievement. Participating school districts include the city of Baltimore, and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Charles, Harford, Howard, Prince George's, and Washington counties. Speakers include educational consultant Dennis Sparks, executive director of the National Staff Development Council, who will give two keynote addresses at 9 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. in Hodson Hall Auditorium; and Colleen Seremet, assistant state superintendent for instruction, who will discuss the implementation and expected outcomes of the new Maryland Teacher Professional Development Standards. The event will also include a gallery walk in the Glass Pavilion featuring displays of best practices created by education researchers and curriculum developers from throughout the university. This is the second annual Hopkins Education Summit created by The Johns Hopkins University Council on K-12 Education, a representative body of the major divisions within Johns Hopkins involved in K-12 educational initiatives: the Graduate Division of Education within the School of Professional Studies in Business and Education; the Center for Social Organization of Schools; the Center for Talented Youth; the Institute for Policy Studies; the Schools of Advanced International Studies; Arts and Sciences; Engineering; Medicine; Nursing; Public Health; the Peabody Institute; and the Applied Physics Laboratory. The event is co-sponsored by the Graduate Division of Education; the Maryland State Department of Education; and The Johns Hopkins Council on K-12 Education.
