News Release
Katie Gradowski, a graduating senior from Parkton, Md., has been named a co-recipient of The Johns Hopkins University's 2005 President's Commendation for Achievement in the Arts. She shares the award with another graduating senior, Neena Marupudi of Amarillo, Texas. Each year, the President's Commendation is given to a graduating senior whose achievements exemplify the arts and service on campus. Gradowski submitted a DVD recording of a short video about the presidential election, a slide show featuring her art and photography, and a film on socialist utopian architecture. She also included a link to J-Stream, a video streaming Web site that she co-founded. J-Stream is online at jstream.jhu.edu. Gradowski's film about socialist utopian architecture is viewable at the J-Stream site under the "student work" link. "The reason the committee selected her was two of her contributions: J-Stream and her involvement in Witness Theater," a group that produces plays written by Johns Hopkins students, said Julie Morgan, chair of the selection committee. Gradowski, who will earn her bachelor's degree in May with majors in both English and the Writing Seminars, will have an internship this summer with National Public Radio in Washington, D.C. In August, she plans to pursue television or radio journalism internships in New York City. Gradowski plans to take a year off from academia, spending some time in the workforce before applying to graduate programs in English literature. "I was thrilled to be receiving this award," Gradowski said. "I've tried to stay as involved in the arts as I can at Hopkins, and it's very encouraging to see the administration supporting the arts in this way." Gradowksi is a 22-year-old senior who graduated from Hereford High School. She is the daughter of Elaine and John Gradowski.
