Prestigious Journal
Ethan T. Vishniac, a professor in the Henry A. Rowland Department of Physics and Astronomy at The Johns Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, has been named editor-in-chief of the Astrophysical Journal. Published by the University of Chicago Press for the American Astronomical Association, the Astrophysical Journal is considered the most important and influential international journal in the field of astronomy. Vishniac's appointment to the position was recommended by a search committee that consisted of the American Astronomical Society's Publications Board. He succeeds Robert C. Kennicutt Jr. of Cambridge University as editor-in-chief. "I am deeply honored to be chosen as editor-in- chief," Vishniac said. "Some of the most distinguished American astronomers of the last hundred years are among my predecessors." Vishniac came to Johns Hopkins in 1998, and served as director of the university's Center for Astronomical Sciences from 1999 to 2002. He earned his B.S. degree in physics and a B.A. degree in applied math from the University of Rochester in 1976, and his Ph.D. in astronomy from Harvard University in 1980. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton, on faculty at the University of Texas at Austin and a visiting professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The AAS awarded him the Helen B. Warner Prize in 1990. He has served as a scientific editor of the Astrophysical Journal since 1997 and has been an associate editor since 2004.
