Media Advisory
Approximately 100 juniors and seniors in Baltimore's public high schools will learn the ins and outs of the admissions process, financial aid and college life from the experts — Johns Hopkins University undergraduates — at the Excel Youth Conference on the university's Homewood campus. Hosted by the Black Student Union and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, the idea is to help students from minority groups find out about higher education opportunities in their own backyard, such as the new Baltimore Scholars Program, under which Johns Hopkins will provide full-tuition scholarships to graduates of Baltimore City public schools accepted into the university's undergraduate programs. (More information at www.jhu.edu/news/home04/jun04/scholar.html). Admissions representatives from Towson University, Baltimore City Community College and University of Maryland, College Park, will also be on hand for a panel discussion and to meet students. Twenty Johns Hopkins students will lead the workshops. Student organizers say they hope the conference will forge a connection between Johns Hopkins and city residents.
