Health Conference to Focus on
Needs of Latino Communities

The legal issues facing the health of the nation's Spanish-speaking communities will be the subject of the third annual Programa Salud student leadership conference from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 10, in room 101 of the Mattin Center on the Homewood campus of The Johns Hopkins University, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore.

Titled "Working Within the System: Health Politics in Maryland and Beyond," the conference is hosted by Programa Salud, a student-run healthcare initiative committed to alleviating the cultural and linguistic barriers facing Hispanics and Latinos when seeking medical care. The event is free and open to the general public, but the target audience is college students in pre-med, pre-law or public health studies programs in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C., area. Members of the medical community are also encouraged to attend.

Speakers will address proposals to require healthcare providers to furnish language interpretation services and the need for cultural competency education for providers. Baltimore City Health Commissioner Peter Beilenson will give welcoming remarks at 10 a.m. The day's keynote speakers will be Olivia D. Carter-Pokras, associate professor of epidemiology and preventive medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and Mara Youdelman, staff attorney at the National Health Law Program. Three workshops to follow the keynote speeches will focus on health politics on the state level, legal issues and the rights of immigrants. Students will be taught by the directors of Programa Salud about how to start their own student health initiatives on campus.

Programa Salud's conference partners are the Baltimore City Health Department, Casey Family Services, Baltimore Health Care Access and Hopkins Emergency Response Organization. For information and to register for the conference, visit http://www.jhu.edu/salud.
