News Release
The Johns Hopkins University will welcome the 1,078-member class of 2008 to the Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St., on Friday, Aug. 27, and Saturday, Aug. 28, in anticipation of the university's 129th academic year beginning Thursday, Sept. 2. A parade of SUVs, minivans and family cars stuffed with the usual back-to-campus staples will roll onto campus by around 8:30 each morning, forming a caravan along the red brick pathways. Continuing their tradition, President William R. Brody William R. Brody and his wife, Wendy, will cruise through the crowd using either their in-line skates or scooters, meeting and greeting parents and students. The hard part for parents with the exception of having to say goodbye will be over once their wheels hit Homewood: Everything from books to bedspreads will be moved into the residence halls by a volunteer brigade of upperclassmen. In the Glass Pavilion, faculty members will mingle over coffee and doughnuts with parents who have wisely left the lifting to the kids.
The rest of Baltimore will have a chance to meet the class of 2008 when the students venture off campus for INVOLVED, a day of service, on Wednesday, Sept. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The freshmen will be dispatched to more than 20 Charm City locales to participate in volunteer projects with local groups including Heart's Place Shelter, Hampden Family Center, Jones Falls Watershed Association and Greenmount Recreation Center. With many sites throughout the city, this event would be a great opportunity for the media to speak with students as they learn about Baltimore and meet people working to make it better. Contact Amy Cowles at 443-287-9960 for the complete list of locations and contact information for student organizers and their advisors.
Other photo opportunities during Orientation Week: Wednesday, Sept 1, 8 10 p.m.: The O-Show, a performance in Shriver Hall by various student arts groups, including a capella singers and bands. Friday, Sept. 3, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Student job fair in the O'Connor Recreation Center.
