While careening the Homewood campus on a pair of Segway Human Transporters, Johns Hopkins University President William R. Brody and his wife, Wendy, will greet 1,052 freshmen as they move into residence halls throughout the day Friday, Aug. 29, and Saturday, Aug. 30. Known for zipping from place to place across campus each year on various wheeled conveyances to greet incoming freshmen and their families, the Brodys are shelving their in-line skates and scooters this year in favor of a decidedly 21st century ride. The Segways are on loan from Segway LLC so the university can decide whether "the first self-balancing, electric-powered transportation device" would be a good way for university staff to navigate the Homewood campus, which is becoming increasingly pedestrian friendly by design. Official move-in hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, but eager parents and students tend to start arriving on campus via University Parkway and Charles Street by 8:30 a.m. Saturday's move-in hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call Amy Cowles at 410-516-7160.
